FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: If we change to nonpartisan elections, will there still be primary elections? A: No. Candidates must submit their nominating petitions by the deadline, which is usually after the primary election around the end of July.
Q: Can candidates run alone or together in a nonpartisan election? A: Both. Typically candidates will run jointly as a ticket sharing a common campaign slogan. It will be possible for registered Independents, Democrats and Republicans to run together on a unity ticket.
Q: Can nonpartisan candidates accept campaign contributions from political parties? A: Yes. All candidates are governed by the NJ Election Law Enforcement Commission and must file campaign contribution reports disclosing the sources of all contributions greater than $300.
Q: Can local political parties still run candidates in a nonpartisan election? A: Yes, however the candidates will not appear on the ballot under the political party line.
